Downsize or Rightsize?

Finding the right place to grow older

The project

The report outlines an approach called "Rightplace" for understanding and improving housing choices for people aged 55 and over in the UK. The ‘Rightplace’ concept aims to create more diverse, tailored housing options for older people based on direct local research with residents, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. The research and frameworks introduced could be a useful starting point for planners, policymakers and designers looking to understand and serve this group.

We utilised and adapted the Centre for Ageing Better’s illustration assets to produce infographic landscapes to present a narrative housing that communicates the key concepts within the report. We introduced a new typeface to help differentiate the report from their other publications.

The challenge

There were a number of complex concepts which need to be communicated in a succinct way. We produced a series of infographic layouts to achieve engaging designs which could be used within the report and in isolation.

The report summarises findings from initial research dividing older residents into 5 segments based on their housing needs and relationships to their community. It provides example "personas" from each segment and potential policy interventions to help them. It introduces a 3-part framework (People, Place, Policy) for applying the Rightplace approach in a given area.
